Abiochem's Ergothioneine Obtains Self-GRAS Certification
Recently, Abiochem’s ergothioneine—a key product in the life health sector—successfully passed the U.S. Self-GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) certification, marking another significant achievement in the company’s global expansion strategy.
The U.S. Self-GRAS certification requires comprehensive demonstration of safety from multiple aspects, including raw materials, production processes, and quality control. It serves as an essential credential for food and related ingredients to enter not only the U.S. but also other high-end international markets. This approval not only validates the product's quality but also reflects Abiochem’s full-chain control capability in the industrialization of synthetic biology technologies.
Compared with traditional methods, synthetic biology offers distinct advantages such as simpler raw material sourcing, milder reaction conditions, and high specificity. These enable the production of higher-purity ergothioneine, free from irritating odors and toxic or hazardous residues, making it safer and more beneficial for life health applications. Abiochem has now achieved large-scale production of ergothioneine.
It is reported that ergothioneine has already gained market access in multiple regions, including the European Union and the United States. As awareness of this ingredient continues to grow in the domestic market, demand is rising rapidly. Abiochem’s Self-GRAS certification will not only fuel its own growth momentum but also provide strong support for the global expansion of China’s ergothioneine industry.
